Recording scratch vocals is just as important as the final. You’ve got to know what you’re working with before you try and finesse it. Singing is extremely emotional and a singer’s psychology must be treated right or you can shut the best parts of them down. The scratch vocal is just the beginning of giving a singer full faith in themselves while, the singer is learning how to trust a producers critiques and creative suggestions. Objectivity is a must, but the subjective must feel right. If your producer and you are not tapped into what it is you’re trying to do with your song and who you are as an artist – the process is not going to hit the emotional mark that it must for a great song. Sometimes you got to push for tuning, articulation, or just raw and uncontrollable. Those variables are always in flux and if your tastes as a producer are limited, you’re not going to be able to know how to communicate if the techniques and language are not available to you that are particular to certain moments of a song in a particular genre.
